オーマル（オマル、オーアマル）　　TimaruとDunidenの中間に位置する、人口約13,000人のこじんまりした街。
オーマル・ストーンと呼ばれる良質な石灰石を使って建造された趣のある街並みがつづく。（19世紀後半の建造）
街の南東にHoiho(yellow-eyed penguin), Koroa(blue-penguin)の2種類のペンギン・コロニーがある。

”The meaning of Oamaru is obscure. It may mean place of Maru, Maru in some traditions being a sea-god,
in others a celestial being personified by a glow in the sky.
However, another legend tells of Tamatea's party from the Takitimu canoe making their way north
after their vessel had foundered in Southland near the mouth of the Waiau River.
The fire they carried with them is said to have been carelessly mislaid here so that it sank into the ground,
causing an inferno that burned for many years (O-ahi-maru could mean place of sheltered fire).
The limestone in the area is said to be the fire's solidified ashes.”

右下の標識、始めは冗談かと思っていた。Oamaru Blue Penguin Colonyで観察後、夜11時過ぎのこと。
車の前方に何かが立っている。ヘッドライトの範囲の下方にぼんやりと。
車を降りて近づくと、ペンギンと目が合った。どうやら上陸ポイントを間違えたようだった。
いけないとは知りつつ、フラッシュをたいて撮影。（後日そのフィルムのみ紛失してしまった・・・）
横切るペンギンに注意。朝5時ごろに起きると海に出勤するペンギンに遭遇できるとか。
このブルーペンギンとオーストラリアのフェアリーペンギンは同種。
